Projects for Computer Classes, K-12

My father, my wife and I all work with a small, private K-12 school. My wife and father teach technology classes there during the day and I function as the school's technology coordinator. We run a pure SUSE Linux environment using a central server that provides all of our network services like network shares, web hosting, blogging, authentication, Internet proxy and filtering, etc.

Our desktops are loaded with software like OpenOffice and KOffice, TuxType, TuxPaint, etc. We have found the SUSE package with the KDE desktop to be perfect for our students and they are really enjoying getting to work with Linux. By using Linux we have been able to provide many resources that we would never have been able to have had otherwise. Our program is on a very severe budget but we feel that we are now able to get as much from our system as the public school in our area here in Upstate New York are able to get from their more expensive systems. So we are quite please. Our computer / technologyprogram has not yet been in place for a whole year yet and we are still learning a lot.

The purpose of this blog is to give us some space to talk about and to allow other to talk to us about ways of teaching technology and computers in the classroom. Specifically we are looking for collaboration and ideas on projects and topics to be used when working with students.
